Thread: How to create a LOCKED & EMPTY Ubuntu PC

challenge 1:
===========
need create ubuntu pc has no icons, no tool-bars, no hot-keys, etc. in other words; after boots presents background , provided no access whatsoever in possible way.

intention run 1 or more programs @ startup, , have programs things accessible.

challenge 2:
===========
need know how have ubuntu hand on program events related communication ports: usb (all device types), serial (if any), firewire (if any), ps/2 kb (if any), ps/2 mouse (if any), cd/dvd & flash-card reader (if any).

intention prevent ubuntu allowing normal operations of devices, , instead pass events program handle or drop communications on own.

can see, locked machine dedicated 1 set of tasks , can not disturbed via communication ports or regular devices, unless attention requested expected controlling program.

so want kind of server no 1 can interact physically? (via keyboard or mouse)

*if answer yes question, not further reply lockup know ctr + alt + l lock screen)

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
