Thread: Installing New Applications

i've been using ubuntu installations is. wish install wine, run few windows programs. have downloaded wine , later aptitude. both came in files .deb extensions, seem zip files in windows. i've unpacked them, don't know go there.

each original file unpacks 3 folders, can't find install or equivalent in of them.

how install these applications?

short answer:

long answer:
should try avoid installing outside of using software center/synaptic/apt-get until you're familiar system. ubuntu nice in provides repository of software, if there want install install using provided tools (which can keep date). no searching on interwebs, no grabbing wrong installer, none of worries. software center should accessible through applications menu, synaptic accessible through applications menu, if not try "synaptic" @ command line, if "command not found" message, run "sudo apt-get -y install synaptic" install synaptic graphical front end apt-get (and nice). after "synaptic" @ command line work. warn, "running without super user permissions" or of sort, means can't make changes. if want add or remove programs through synaptic, you'll need launch "sudo synaptic". , apt-get, apt-get 1 of basic ubuntu tools (i.e. it's installed in minimal ubuntu installs). , can install, update , remove programs you. wanted firefox, i'd run "sudo apt-get install firefox" , that'd me.

1) don't download .deb files until know how apt-get/synaptic/software center work.
2) software center should accessible through graphical interface (i've never used can't tell how)
3) synaptic if installed might graphically accessible, if can't find graphically try "synaptic" @ command line, if says "command not found" install via "sudo apt-get -y install synaptic" run "synaptic" launch.
4) apt-get installed , go on command line.
