Thread: Where should I install my downloaded package

hi all,

i've downloaded octave 3.4 (source code) , want install it. question (note: i'm not concerned how install)?

don't want pollute home folder, people install there downloaded packages. guess comparing windows version of 'program files' folder.

downloads go in special "downloads" folder. if you're using terminal (command line), can use navigate folder:
code:
cd ~/downloads
note: it's capital d, not lower-case d.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings. how do I change the e-mail address for my merchant account
