History behind Photoshop's original filters

hey all,

i'm trying little background info on photoshop's inspiration, filters , history related photography. eons ago, when student, remember reading in old graphic design manuals snippet on photoshop's filters , origins. photographer's influenced particular style techniques made possible , how came photoshop.

for reason, can't find info on over internet , i've long ago sold graphic design manual.

does know little history behind ps's original filters , photographer's experimented these techniques in ol' days when there no computers , done manually?

any links helpful.

thanks.

i believe must talking things "unsharp mask", darkroom operator de-focus image , make negative transparency, layer negative transparency original when doing print, enhance contrast of edges.

wikipedia source, e.g.:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/unsharp_masking

the original author of photoshop thomas knoll (who still works adobe 1 camera raw plug-in). perhaps using name might in searches original thinking went photoshop. i'm sure i've seen descriptions of work on photoshop out there.
