Thread: Cinnamon Desktop ppa for Ubuntu 11.10

this went faster thought. "merlwiz79" there ppa new cinnamon desktop. cinnamon fork of gnome 3 , can coexist gnome 3 , unity. basically, cinnamon gives (most) of , feel of classic gnome 2 desktop, speed of gnome 3.

if don't unity, you. aware cinnamon lacks lot of configuration options planned , while cinnamon stable me, still considered in alpha stage.

add cinnamon desktop in oneric or precise:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-stable  sudo apt-get update  sudo apt-get install cinnamon

now log out, select "cinnamon" session on log-in page , log in again.

known issue: ubuntu software center not on cinnamon menu. if need it, can manually add launcher.

this ubuntu noob says: detest unity thought i'd give cinnamon whirl, seems have gone amiss.

installation appeared go fine, no errors reported. logged out, logged in on cinnamon session .. no cinnamon desktop. think i've got gnome default: top bar, bottom bar (no "menu" item on left), etc.

i've looked in software center , i've got latest (1.1.3) installed.

fwiw, i'm running on old pentium 4 system matrox g550 graphics. maybe i'd defaulting baseline because system can't handle cinnamon? bummer.

@ point had installed new "minty" theme cinnamon couldn't find way activate or select it. went applications > other > advanced settings , found this, thought might relevant:
