so installed ubuntu month ago on vaio. happy performance , features, having difficulty finding means of making recovery system. want able have bootable recovery option mitigate system crash, recovery disks windows. can use ubuntu live usb used original install??

some things can fixed ubuntu live cd, if mess things , have fresh install you'll loose data. creating separate home partition when installing ubuntu can limit this.

program make live cd of system now, if have reinstall can reinstall state in when cd made, rather starting scratch.

having said that, more difficult fatally crash ubuntu system (accidentally) in windows - provided use sudo command appropriately!

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
