Thread: Removing an old Ubuntu installation

hi,

have 2 versions of ubuntu installed on laptop (11.04 , 11.10). since i'm happy 11.10, want remove old installation , allocate free space new ubuntu installation partition.

partitions:
code:
... windows partitions ... /dev/sda4 extended /dev/sda7 ext4 ubuntu 11.10 /dev/sda5 swap /dev/sda6 ext4 ubuntu 11.04
note order of partitions correct, though numbering of partitions may suggests otherwise

questions are:
- safe remove sda6 , allocate space sda7 using gparted? mean, work? seems bit risky me.
- how can repair bootloader after doing operation? necessary @ all?
- on desktop have similar situation. difference on machine first have 11.04 partition , 11.10 partition. can perform same operation in case? of course, in case complete 11.10 partition have moved in order use free space.

thanks,
martin

you can use disk utility tool format /dev/sda6 (11.04) clean. or use gparted livecd delete partition , if possible merge partition.

if had installed grub bootloader when had installed 11.10 don't think need worry it.
