i have 2006 dell dimension 9200 came preinstalled windows xp. in 2009, son, unbeknownst me, installed ubuntu on , subsequently upgraded grub grub 2 (i think). bottom line cannot boot windows xp on it. on power shows me following options:
1. chainload windows xp
2. ubuntu ....
3. ubuntu ....
4. memory test ...
5. memory test ...
6. dell utility partition
if pick first option, says 'unknown command 'chainloader +1'.
starts ubuntu without problem.
how can fix can boot windows xp? not expert in ubuntu, , son not know enough either fix it. new forum. if not right subgroup, please forward right subgroup. also, please send me email instructions.

while in linux can run command , post output? list of disks/partitions , type. purpose see if windows xp partition still there or not.

code:
sudo fdisk -l
if windows xp partition still there (probably ntfs type) updating grub should fix issue. update grub run command below (and restart when completes). @ installed operating systems , kernels , rebuild menu scratch.

code:
sudo update-grub
if windows xp partition isn't there anymore that's story, in case have windows xp install disc or factory recovery disc around somewhere.
