Change background colour in tools window to transparent

i understand background colour in tools window used make gradient fills , fill in erased areas of image. want change colour transparent can fill in erased area of image transparent chequered background. how go this? i'm using photoshop cs2.

open photoshop :  go file......then new....u see pop window.....go to ground contents....it white now.....see drop down arrow on same line....hit on , change transparent.

now open new window , u see transparent checker ground.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
