LR 4.4 - Local Adjustment Brush Not Local Anymore

my (previously wonderful) local adjustment brush has apparently quit working.  whenever attempt make local adjustments - using either standard presets or custom settings - adjustments made applied entire image, not locally.  density , flow set typical values , show selected mask overlay shows extent of appied effect, whatever adjustment make applied generally, on entire photo, rather selected adjustment area. 

try restarting lr.
