sudo apt-get install libgtk1.2
terminal tell me package not available
use ubuntu 11.10

download each deb architecture (i386=32bit) home folder run command
specified each deb in order listed
eg install in order
code:
sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture libgtk1.2-common_1.2.10-18.1build2_all.deb  sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture libglib1.2ldbl_1.2.10-19build1_i386.deb  sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture libgtk1.2_1.2.10-18.1build2_i386.deb

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
