Thread: Having problems partitioning drive for home NAS

i trying make home nas.

i've installed ubuntu server , have ssh'd it.

server has 2 hds each 2tb in size. want share them samba jbod.

os version - linux 2.6.32-34-server #77-ubuntu smp x86_64 gnu/linux
command line only, there no gui.
other hardware - irrelevant

my problem:
trying partition or mount partition on 1 of disks. (i'm not sure because i'm semi-noob.)
second drive, sdb formatted, mounted , working fine. first drive problem. first drive (which has os), seems have 1.8tb missing or unallocated or unformatted, mounted, whatever, don't know. can't figure out how mount or format unused space can mounted , shared.

try parted , list current partitions:

$ sudo parted
gnu parted 2.2
using /dev/sda
welcome gnu parted! type 'help' view list of commands.

you have create filesystem on unallocated space before can mount it.
