Thread: Home Server / File Server build advice.


hi,
looking build myself little home/file server run on ubuntu (probably 12.04 lts when available 11.10 until then). used nas storage, torrent client , media streaming adaptable, may want convert semi-gaming or editing rig in future. don't want run 24/7 have running week @ time reasonably energy efficient good. first full build , writing post ask advice, below have outlined current thinking, appreciate help, suggestions , problems current plan.

thinking base on amd fusion chip (probably a6-3500) relatively low power (65w tdp) , yet plenty powerful enough, particularly taking account onboard graphics understand important transcoding , streaming.

don't want big looking @ micro atx case, htpc line style , size , want have on, rather under, desk. this favourite far.

don't know motherboards looking @ along lines of this has onboard gigabit lan, plenty of i/o ports , made company have heard of.

software wise, although have been using ubuntu on , off number of years, not yet confident enough have command line interface. because of intend use standard ubuntu running programs such transmission , mediatomb fulfill needs.

help, advice or pointing out of problems appreciated.

i not on amd chips have no comments on chip mentioned, intel i3 might way go. plenty of performance , relatively low power usage.
