Thread: Ubuntu Installation Issues

i'm trying install ubuntu on dell inspiron mini 10 laptop rid of bad virus got on windows xp. i'm installing ubuntu cd burned on ubuntu site (version 11.10). start fine until gets start of installation. when it's done copying files , actual installation starts, screen turns black, cursor still there , it's frozen. have force shutdown on laptop turn off.

many reasons
1) damaged cd (cds unreliable, "just burned" cd has incorrect data.
if case. experienced several times.

2) damaged burner - burner "burns" incorrect data (maybe 1 incorrect sector - enough). experienced well.

assume have not tried once, several times?


suggest create bootable usb (according manual on ubuntu.com) , tell here whether worked or not.

usb sticks have own problems booting sometimes, if cd path not work, simplest workaround.

if usb works problem solved. if hangs cd, problem deeper , particular laptop/kernel/hardware combination.

question: live cd mode work? or hang installation.
if ubuntu starts ok live cd 1 thing. if hangs same, thing.
please post answer question, help.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
