Thread: unmet dependencies - can't install gimp on 11.10


running ubuntu 11.10 64-bit

can't seem install gimp after having uninstalled in effort clear various glitchy behavior has been going on since upgrade 11.04 11.10

$ sudo apt-get install gimp
reading package lists... done
building dependency tree
reading state information... done
packages not installed. may mean have
requested impossible situation or if using unstable distribution required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of incoming.
following information may resolve situation:

following packages have unmet dependencies:
gimp : depends: gimp-data (<= 2.6.11-z) 2.7.3-2011052002~nn installed
e: unable correct problems, have held broken packages.

i've read several related threads in forums , tried cleaning , purging , re-installing no avail.

you problem stems upgrade 11.04 11.10. appears have
held broken packages, , need fix those. should
under synaptics -> edit -> fix broken packages

around should see if gimp-data installed, , if is,
remove older version ((<= 2.6.11-z) 2.7.3-2011052002).
can open terminal , install gimp-data.
code:
sudo apt-get install gimp-data --force-yes
which should dependency installed. install gimp.
code:
sudo apt-get install gimp
that should work.......
