How do I change the background page length

i have altered page lengths end after footer, when published page still scrolls down miles of empty space after footer, on every page, regardless of page content , length.  have tried altering minimum page length , fit window, nothing seems work.  ideas.

unlock , select (ctrl/cmd + a) on master page (if happening associated pages) , empty or transparent objects on page (most text frame) leading unnecessary increase in page length. might want switch between sticky footer option site/page properties , see if helps.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
