Thread: Creating a partition as a network drive

so here trying accomplish, , figured id ask little more knowledge on topic before start pounding away trying figure out.

have linux box running ubuntu 10.10 500mb partition.

trying able access 500mb partition network drive pc running windows 7. windows 7 pc needs read write permissions network drive (partition on linux box).

reasoning windows pc , linux box need share specific files applications engineered, , instead of using samba (which going first option cause hear great file sharing application), create lone drive partition , make rest of linux box partitions inaccessible (for security reasons). seems logical me security purposes.

guess real question is, how go about's setting linux partition can accessed through network , permissions add drive (drive partitioned ntfs can changed if there better solution)? drive need mounted on boot (which think can edit in fstab file , exports file) , set connected to.

point me in right direction or tips in better way accomplish great!

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
