Thread: New to Ubuntu and SSH server (public key)

hi, first install on ubuntu. trying because not freesshd (or other flavors) of ssh server work on older xp pro box.

have client wants send datafile on ssh. on unix/aix environment, nothing windows, , want send file automated. need comply, , offer ssh account/access this. have sent on 'public key' file supposed placed [somewhere] authenticates them them being them , being us.. =)

installed ubuntu on old machine, , found tut install ssh server
(simple enough).. went windows box , used putty test it.. , seemed log in fine using username/password combo (testing locally using lan ip, have not tried test outside firewall , having ssh request forward on ubuntu machine handle rest)..

went ubuntu install, , made new user account on system user: 'xxx' standard account, , gave password...

went windows machine again, tested, using new user account name/password, , worked.

@ point bit stumped on how these key files our client sent on us, supposed placed in directory (no clue how navigate directory.. dont see when searching through gui explorer form home folder..etc)

provide first timer help/advice?

appreciate replies.

thanks!
