sir,
have 50 networked computers.
1 of machines server class machine.
wish implement nis & nfs based login 49 clients.
based on reading far, learned ..if server fails clients cannot login.
doubt whether can keep 2 accounts @ client computers, 1 login nis server, , other normal user account not use nis server.

if possible, if server fails, can still login in client machines usng secondary account in case of emergency. possible have secondary account not require nis server up?

sure can local account log client when nis down, different account. nis account "global account". it's practice make "local" account on each client machine. not use same login local account. use first name local account , first initial + last name global account.

local user emergencies can keep simple home directory not need nfs mounted home directory.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
