A middle ground between finished video and project file?

i never thought see day, hard disks fill nothing. cannot save these projects. once have exported them 1 format need @ moment, delete source project material (videos, images, music files, project files, etc.) , leave finished video. might work @ moment, if later want in different format? i'd lose data.

 

is there such thing standard, compressed, lossless format purpose? "archival video" format, can produce "end user" videos? is, "only save included in final video, 100% lossless."

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
