Thread: DNS Resolution Problem(?) / Websites are SLOW

solution below

hello,

experiencing problem machine @ moment driving me insane

basically, have xubuntu 11.10 amd64 machine, has been working ages. yesterday there powercut, rebooted machine after , came on absolutely fine.

next thing know, web pages loading ridiculously in chrome, firefox , chromium.

thought there wrong network. booted windows 7 virtualbox guest, , boom, pages load fine on machine. still slow on ubuntu box.

thought, maybe it's dns, changed google's dns, opendns , couple of others , problem not resolved. have question mark in title of thread because don't think it's dns, can resolve hostnames ip addresses fine using dig command, , works quickly. whereas in lynx, chromium , firefox honorificly slow.

have checked settings, , used while ago having disable ipv6, did that, no avail.

have asked on irc , helped couple of people running diagnostics, , little came of it.

appreciate help/input. i'm sorry post long

--- solution ---

well, it's solved. have never ever had problem before.

checked /etc/nsswitch.conf file see if there errors...

code:
hosts: files mdns4_minimal [notfound=return] wins dns mdns4
within line, "wins" mentioned. samba tool resolving windows network names.

removed file:

code:
hosts: files mdns4_minimal [notfound=return] dns mdns4
system normal, other fact have remember ips of windows machines now. how messed

how connected web? router? dsl or cable modem? both have suffered same power cut (unless tied ups). try reboot of these, see if problem resolved (first dsl/cable modem, when stable, restart router).

luck!
