Thread: HTPC idea?

hello all,

without going in dept. have lot of media, , use ubuntu watch all. have them on spare ide drives had around, , used old ide external drive parts use them. 2 externals had different wires rip, , don't work.

started trying think of ways watch media off ide drives. of them included:

- building desktop spare parts
- buying sort of ide dock/enclosure
- buying 1tb drive, building temp system , transferring stuff on that. using dock watch.

found flaws in both. last 2 money; made first 1 more appealing. started looking ways to make first option work. backup , restores etc. hit me. how going watch this? liked laying on bed watching stuff on laptop, , don't have spare monitor large enough make work.

though maybe htpc?

i've heard of them, never did lot of looking. i'm thinking of building pc (spare parts) , having stream laptop. way can have casual viewing, still use spare ide drives, , not have worry swapping , having these drives around.

doable? i'm thinking having machine in room, , turning on when need it, , control laptop. want laptop thing communicates with. so, don't want seen other computers on network.

its possible. not sure other people not being able 'see' it, can restrict access it.

in possition do, old computer, put hdd in it, set samba, , configure iptables drop conections except own ip.
