Thread: is it ever safe to store password in text files?
i've run programs store passwords in plain text files, seem risky me.
1 advice read was: "if wish store passwords in text files, can set permissions on these files have no access "group" , "other", , set owner uid same uid runs application needs read file. set uid cannot log in."
i'm new concept of uids i'm not sure accomplishes -- make difficult others see file without user password, if have access hard drive? if so, instruction on how welcome. thanks.
the answer original question quite simply: no.
being said other example saying if absolutely have reason, you're limiting access file user, , root access, further using chattr make permissions immutable.
being said if you're having difficulty remembering passwords better alternative keepass or lastpass.
final question, if person has access hard drive, meaning physical access machine, none of these methods stop them obtaining passwords exception of encrypts them (like lastpass).
hope helps.
