Thread: Various performance problems
i'd value advice re where/how start troubleshooting old, self-built desktop (3ghz p4, 2gb ram, 4 x hdds ide/sata mix. wired ethernet connection neufbox broadband modem/router (i'm in france.)).
have winxpsp3 & ubuntu 11.10 dual booting on c/sda. updated u11.10 10.04. before that.
few days ago tried installing ubuntu studio on m/sdd (a 1tb ntfs drive i'd been using media storage). kept ntfs partition media data , installed studio on new partitions. great problems installing alternate dvd , gave , tried installing studio 8.04 instead.
installed, errors showing in terminal did so, , when completed boot in ok, noticed no internet connection.
yesterday booted standard ubuntu , noticed firefox running slow. first became apparent when gmail stopped functioning smoothly - unable send. other pages giving 'server reconnected' type errors. have 3 tabs on home page. when reload ff, 1 connects immediately, others hang , hang.
dropbox syncing, think more slowly. ubuntu software centre loads, , managed install chrome, took forever , same slowdown when running chrome, it's not firefox problem.
rebooted winxp. before loading ran disk check, time time. however, time, first ever, started reporting problems , screed of "deleting corrupt attribute record 128" ensued. decamped downstairs google on laptop , returned expecting worst, find pc had restarted , booted fine ubuntu default, had been before.
booted xp, time without incident, disabled/paused trying update , tried firefox. ages loading, got there , connectivity good, gmail working example. however, noticed in task manager, i'd opened when first booted in order monitor processes might eating resources, cpu running @ near 100%, though no obvious culprit processes. got warning cpu overheating, after poking around bit more , finding nothing played safe , shut down.
when fire again i'm flummoxed start: windows or ubuntu? hardware or software? do?![]()
