Thread: first install problems

hello,
total newbie here, patience appreciated.

got around trying install ubuntu on old win server 2003 box... tried10.04.1 failed @ install package after formatting partitions... desktop version 10.04.3 failed cd errors (burned iso)... downloaded , started 11.10 desktop version (burned iso) , it's been sitting on purple screen red white dots 45 minutes now...

@ point not impressed... i've been told should install --- win server 2003 installed on old celeron box, you'd think well.

did format drives win installed on... no biggie... ubuntu installed. however, booting current cd doesn't seem want go install, , there's no command prompt or options install or run cd.

now?

are burning @ low speeds, not more 8x?

install cds best burned @ low speeds since cds today go 56x. reduces errors.

loading live mode (try ubuntu) can fail because of bad cd/image, or hardware issue, graphics. video card computer have?

also, it's best download torrent checks corruption during download.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
